The ‘Jail Cell’ Residency supports artists, writers and curators by offering a truly unique studio experience in San Francisco’s SOMA district. The basement studio, covering around 600 square feet, will serve as a blank backdrop for site-specific projects and experimental exhibitions. Within the studio’s basement layer there is a physical jail cell, the last remnant of the historic previous tenant’s leather and bondage store, Stormy Leather. We encourage risk-taking and thought-provoking concepts that are site-specific to this one-of-a-kind space. Please fill out this application. We look forward to hearing from you!

PS Are you an arts writer? We currently are taking submissions for local writers to have a desk in our upstairs gallery office. This editorial position will create artist interviews, critical essays and the like. We love the idea of artists and writers working alongside each other in a creative environment. Alter Space embraces a new generation of art critics in the Bay Area.

*Generously funded by Southern Exposure’s Alternative Exposure Grant.
