The Jail Cell Residency supports artists, writers, and curators by offering a unique opportunity in San Francisco’s SOMA district. The studio, measuring approximately 600 square feet, serves as a backdrop or inspiration for site-specific projects and experimental exhibitions. The residency is named for the mock jail cell located in the basement, a remnant of former tenant Stormy Leather as well as a reference to the neighborhood’s historic ties to leather and kink culture. We encourage risk-taking practices that produce thought-provoking installations that may only be realized in this unconventional space.

Submissions are currently closed. Next deadline in May 2016.
The Jail Cell Residency was generously awarded a 2014 Southern Exposure Alternative Exposure Grant.
