On March 8, 2013, Alter Space with bill unveiling a collection of recent works by Aaron Hodges, Grady Gordon and Yee Jan Bao. Both Gordon and Hodges studied under Yee Jan Bao while enrolled at the California College of the Arts. Gordon, who lives and works in Oakland, CA, will be exhibiting a new body of full figure monotypes that serve as a narrative based on transformative states of being. Born and raised in Santa Fe, NM, Grady has long been investigating the world beyond our visible limits through such phenomena as biolocation and spirit myths of a variety of different cultures.

Aaron Hodges currently works as a tattoo artist at Idle Hand in San Francisco. He comes from a military family in addition to serving 4 years in the US Navy himself. Oil is his primary medium outside of the tattoo studio and will be presenting a collection of portraits of people adorned with various types of armor. These works will examine class, uniform, conformity as well as the figurative and literal usage of army within contemporary society.

Yee Jan Bao currently lives and works in Oakland while serving on the faculty at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. He has also previously taught at the Rhode Island School of Design and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The subject matter in many of his oil paintings seem to exist in a surrealist time space continuum. Bao will be contributing a series of portraits based on former students depicted in what he refers to as “the no zone”, an etheric space void of discernible reference.
